Throughout this week small girls have been coming to me, with ears recently pierced, all complaining of pain. The piercing not v. skilfully done - most of them
had nasty sores and sepsis around the pierced part. When the ear is first pierced a piece of string is put through the hole and tied. After a day or two cheap
ear-rings are worn. Several girls seem to have had their ears pierced at the same time - is it always done in waves, or is it just because one had it done and
the others wanted the same thing. i(0196 Yakup Ko's)'s daughter says i(5057 Kiraz Ate) ({> or 0049? i(0045 Mustafa Ate)'s wife) pierced the ears of these
girls. Sev. other women in the village do it, but she is supposed to do it better than most.
A baby of 1 yr., Fatma, child of i(0065 Cemal Ate)'s 'gelin', brought to me with her ears just pierced.
