Page: 34-36 & 53
Date: 25-26. 9. 49.
Location: Sakaltutan
Note:

Sunday 25/9, 26/9. Evening visit to find a room, arrived 6.30 p.m. Greeted and welcomed.
M{uhtar} kept the children out of his room.
Food - Mant (? no meat), bulgur (twice). a little dried cheese, kavun, coffee for breakfast
cooked on thistles burning under a couple of slabs of tezek {gl: dried dung and straw} and a few sticks in the fireplace.
k<diet,fuel>
Father-Son - Muhtar was noticeably much severer with i(0182 Sleyman){ his son} than {was}his Grandfather.
Group formed in the evening, of all ages from boys to grandfathers, only the young children
excluded. One boy i(0123 Mehmet Canveren) was head of his family, but they were not, presumably, all so.
k< F/S relations, oda group>
Muhtar's business :
(i) list of 69 people to pay tax to Hava Kuruma, some apparently 2 units, others one.
One payment of 70 k., Bekci acts as collector - sort of executive and personal servant of Muhtar
(N.B. in Kayseri with him Wed.). Difficulty in adding up numbers and deciding how many had paid.
k:<household, tax, hava kurumu, genealogy, village>

(ii) 2 gendarmes arrive, (a.m. 26/9) didn't ask their business, masses of pieces of paper all
over the place. Stayed to lunch.
Muhtar's aylk (I think) was 25 TL, said to have been in money even eskiden, though hoca's and bekci's used not to be {gl: they used to be payed in kind}.
Finding a room - Stage (i) Nothing doing, unless Mdr's permission- p.m. Sun.
(ii) a.m. Monday - willing to show me rooms - shows me i(0022 Selahattin Aksoyb)'s room, to which I foolishly agreed. 15 TL a month
(iii) p.m. - I changed my mind, and was finally promised the guest room of a house on the
south side of the village at 17.5 TL.
(iv) Wed.{27th} Met Muhtar in Kayseri, and was told I have been allotted to the school building.
Permission now confirmed. At stage (iii) a lot of discussion about ayip {gl : shameful}, which I could not quite follow.
k<village business, muhtar, finding a room for me>
Mistake to be so generous with my money. Offer not to ask for the 5 TL back {gl: presumably I paid a deposit} causes astonishment.

Spent some time asking names of people and house owners.
Eitmen. North side of road, central, looking on to road. i(0185 Ali Osman Kartn).
His neighbour (E) whose room I nearly took, i(0022 Selahattin Aksoyb).
i(0583 Mustafa Azgn), Muhtar's day, blue plimsolls, due north of muhtar, about five houses.
Ex-muhtar (Mdr Tuesday 27th said Tuberculosis was cause of the change)
i(0462 Ali Canveren)
i(0123 Mehmet Canveren) his father's brother's son, brother { crossed out } killed in the war imi (? 1923 - would make him 26 which he can't be) { here I
wrote above in blue 'lie or misunderstanding' stupid of me - obviously a matter of generations}{gl: clear later with notes and genealogy} lives with his
mother in a tiny room with pots and pans, a raised end kept apart by a
rail. Mother had 2 grandchildren, and a neighbour (Russian). {gl: I have no memory or other mention of this 'Russian' Must have misunderstood ? }
i(0123 Mehmet Canveren) has 3 sisters married in Sakaltutan, one with 2 small children others with none.
They taught me a lot of words, while the Russian told me the Russian words.

{gl: my village Turkish was limited}

Sitting in a group outside i(0286 Nazim Tufan)'s house {gl: written in the margin}

i(0144 Osman Gursu) - south east side of N.T.
