Note:

3/8 i(0270 Bilal)'s chum Haci from Travun - svac and duvarci {gl: plasterer and waller} - got contract for 4 schools, Sakaltutan, Sleymanli, and 2 in
other places, - contracted at 4 T.L. a sq. m. of outside wall, contract to be completed in 60 days, he is responsible, fine of 500 T.L.; he has to arrange his
own labour, they give materials. This job {Sk ?} contains about 50 sq. m. of wall. He gave the job to i( Duran Tademir), who is responsible for this and this
only.
This man was ahbab (erbab) {friend} in Iskanderun, worked 5 years for Braithwaite's as a svaci - still had his paper, very pleased with it - also showed me
contract for the schools job.
I calculated he and his partner would earn about 600 T.L. in the 2 months - he agreed,
{I} "there i(0270 Bilal), if you learned a trade you could earn 300 T.L. and pay your debts"
Haci, "if I had 10 dnm I'd plough it and be damned to this", -
I "why, it's good money",
he "I've made 100 T.L. this year so far"

{c: men said over and over that farming was better than migration; by 1990s it was obvious that farming in S was muc less remunarative than most other
occuaptions.}

k<village employment, government contract for schools, land better>*
